Penny Roo transforms a humble pre-decimal Australian penny into a vivid hand-painted miniature artwork.
The familiar kangaroo motif is reimagined through layers of colour and painterly surface treatment, creating an atmosphere that feels somewhere between desert light, oxidised metal, and dreamscape. The coin’s original markings remain visible beneath the painting, preserving its history while shifting it into a new ornamental context.
Set in sterling silver and sealed beneath a protective coating, the piece balances nostalgia, national symbolism, and playful reinvention. What was once an everyday object becomes intimate, luminous, and unexpectedly precious when worn on the hand.
