Learn to use a sewing machine and overlocker while making practical projects you'll actually use.

These sewing classes are designed for beginners and returning sewists who want practical guidance in a relaxed and enjoyable studio environment. Guests develop skills while making useful and enjoyable items. Projects can be finished with a textile label, adding a professional touch to their creations.

Projects are chosen in consultation to suit each guest's interests, experience level, and goals. Depending on their interests, guests may work on projects such as aprons, pyjama sets, simple garments, homewares, bags, or other practical sewing projects.

A selection of project kits is available for purchase. These include mix-and-match 100% linen apron and tea towel sets in both adult and child sizes. Kits include thread and any notions required to complete the project.

A curated selection of Liberty of London fabrics and other fabric options is also available for purchase. Guests who would like to prepare before class can receive guidance on fabric selection, quantities, matching thread, and other materials required for their chosen project.

If you already own a sewing machine but don't quite know how to use it properly, bring it along. Learning on your own machine can help you build confidence and develop skills that transfer directly to your sewing at home.

Guests may bring their own sewing machine or use studio equipment during the session. Instruction is tailored to individual needs, allowing guests to progress at their own pace while receiving practical guidance throughout the class.

During the class, guests will learn:

  • Sewing machine setup and operation
  • Threading and troubleshooting
  • Needle, thread, and fabric selection
  • Basic sewing techniques and construction methods
  • Seams, hems, and finishing techniques
  • Introduction to overlocker use
  • Working from patterns and project instructions
  • Tips for maintaining and caring for a sewing machine

Materials

Materials are not included in the class fee.

Guests may:

Project kits include thread and any notions required for the selected project. Guidance on materials can be provided prior to class if required.

For beginners, simple woven fabrics such as cotton, cotton blends, linen, and similar materials are recommended. Stretch fabrics, slippery fabrics, silks, satins, and other specialty textiles can be more challenging to sew and are not generally recommended for beginners.

Guests with more sewing experience are welcome to work with more challenging fabrics and projects in consultation with Rose.


About the workshop

These sewing lessons focus on building confidence with sewing machines and overlockers through practical, hands-on making.

Participants may work on different projects during the same session, with guidance tailored to individual interests and skill levels.

The atmosphere is relaxed, supportive, and beginner friendly, with an emphasis on practical skills, confidence building, and enjoyable making.

Participants may learn:

• Machine threading and setup

• How to confidently use their own sewing machine

• Cutting and preparing fabric

• Seam construction and finishing

• Pockets, hems, waistbands, and buttonholes

• Mitred corners and loops

• Pressing and topstitching

Projects are adapted to suit different experience levels and interests.

Studio sewing machines, overlocker, irons, and cutting tools are also available during class.

Fabric advice can be provided before the session if needed.
